Chapter 2 - The Escape

The shockwave of the explosion knocked David straight to the concrete pavement.
His ears rang with a high-pitched whine.
He felt a pair of small hands pulling on his shirt.
It was little Leo, looking surprisingly calm for a child who just watched a car blow up.
Sarah hauled David to his feet with surprising strength.
She yelled at him to give her the keys to his vehicle.
David hesitated for a second.
He was a government employee and he was supposed to call the police.
Sarah grabbed him by the collar and pinned him against the brick wall.
She explained that the local police chief was on her ex-husband's payroll.
She told him that calling the authorities was basically calling a hit squad.
David finally handed over the keys to his modest silver sedan.
They sprinted across the school lawn as thick black smoke filled the air.
Sarah shoved Leo into the backseat and jumped behind the wheel.
David climbed into the passenger seat just as sirens began to wail in the distance.
Sarah slammed her foot on the gas pedal.
The car tore out of the school zone and onto the main highway.
David demanded to know the full story.
Sarah revealed that her ex-husband Marcus was a powerful arms dealer.
She had stolen a ledger containing all of his offshore accounts to secure immunity.
She had been acting erratic and careless to break any identifiable tracking patterns.
David suddenly noticed a heavy black SUV tailing them closely in the rearview mirror.
He told Sarah they had dangerous company.

The SUV accelerated and slammed violently into their rear bumper.
The silver sedan spun out of control toward the edge of a steep ravine.
