Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

David adamantly refused to accept this was how it ended.

He dropped his silver pistol and quickly pulled out his personal smartphone.

He had been live-streaming the entire bloody confrontation directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He screamed at the corrupt SWAT officers that fifty federal agents were currently watching this exact feed.

The lead officer hesitated nervously and looked at his equally confused partner.

David confidently declared that the state police and the FBI were already surrounding the entire perimeter.

The bluff was a massive and desperate gamble, but David delivered it with absolute conviction.

Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of heavier tactical helicopters filled the night air.

Federal choppers swarmed the airspace, proving David was not bluffing at all.

Federal FBI agents flooded the rooftop, aggressively disarming the corrupt SWAT officers.

Marcus looked around and finally realized he had lost everything.

He dropped his knife and raised his hands in bitter, undeniable defeat.

Federal agents slammed Marcus onto the gravel and locked him in heavy iron cuffs.

Sarah fell to her knees, sobbing with overwhelming relief as she realized it was truly over.

David rushed forward and wrapped his arms protectively around her.

Leo ran up the metal stairs and joined them in a tight, desperate family hug.

The terrifying nightmare that had haunted them for years was finally finished.

Three months later, they moved to a quiet, sunny neighborhood in a brand new state.

Sarah was finally able to be a normal mother, packing daily lunches and driving the speed limit.

David had transferred his government job to stay close to the family he had fought so hard to save.

Life was perfectly peaceful and incredibly boring in the best way possible.

One morning, Sarah walked down the sunny driveway to open her new metal mailbox.

She found a single, unmarked black envelope resting quietly inside.

She tore it open and pulled out a fresh polaroid picture of David sleeping peacefully in his new apartment.

Scrawled casually across the bottom of the photo in wet red ink were the words: "Did you really think I worked alone?"
