Mrs. Rose recognized the logo on the key immediately.
It belonged to the old central railway station on the other side of town.
She rushed there as fast as she could, constantly looking over her shoulder.
She found locker number forty-two and inserted the cold metal key.
The locker clicked open to reveal a small black digital flash drive and another handwritten letter.
She unfolded the paper with shaking hands.
"Mom, this drive contains all the evidence to put Vanessa in prison for life," the letter read.
"Take it to the federal authorities, but do not trust the local police."
Mrs. Rose clutched the drive to her chest, feeling a surge of protective hope.
She could finally save her son from this terrible nightmare.
She turned around to walk toward the exit of the busy train station.
Suddenly, the crowd parted in front of her.
Three men in sharp black suits were blocking the main doors.

One of them was the same man who had visited her house the night before.
He pointed directly at her, and all three men began sprinting in her direction.
