The rain continued to hammer against the thin glass of the window.
Mrs. Rose stared at the thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills resting on her kitchen table.
Her hands trembled as she read the small, crumpled note again.
"...I could not say it in front of her..."
She knew exactly who "her" was.
It was Vanessa, the wealthy and ruthless woman Leo had married three years ago.
Vanessa had isolated Leo from his family, treating Mrs. Rose like a dirty peasant.
Leo had pushed his mother away in the rain today to protect her.

Suddenly, a pair of bright headlights swept across her dark living room wall.
A sleek black SUV had just pulled into her narrow driveway.
Heavy footsteps approached her front porch.
