Chapter 2 - The Unwelcome Guest

Mrs. Rose panicked and shoved the thick envelope under the loose floorboard beneath the rug.
She quickly zipped up the empty canvas bag and filled it with old newspapers to make it look full.
She took a deep breath and slowly opened the front door.
A man in a sharp black suit stood on her porch, holding a large umbrella.
His eyes were cold and calculating as they scanned her small living room.
"My boss believes your son accidentally left a very important envelope inside that bag of rice," the man said.
Mrs. Rose forced a confused look onto her wrinkled face.
"He just gave me rice because I am struggling to buy groceries," she lied smoothly.
The man stepped forward, invading her personal space.
He snatched the bag from her hands and unzipped it.
Seeing only newspapers and a few grains of rice, his jaw tightened in anger.
"If you are lying to Vanessa, you and your son will simply disappear," the man warned.
He dropped the bag on the wet porch and walked back to his vehicle.
Mrs. Rose locked the door, her heart pounding against her ribs.
