Chapter 9 - The Final Threat

The black speedboat cut its engine and drifted silently toward the pier.

A man dressed in full tactical gear stood at the bow of the small vessel.

He raised a high-powered sniper rifle and aimed the laser sight directly at Nathan.

Dr. Evans had a heavily armed backup team waiting in the harbor the entire time.

Marcus screamed for us to get down and pushed Nathan hard to the concrete.

A high-caliber bullet ricocheted off the metal railing just inches from where Nathan was standing.

I grabbed Sophia and dove desperately behind a thick stack of wooden shipping pallets.

The sniper fired again, shattering the wood right above my head into dangerous splinters.

The police cars finally smashed through the locked gates of the shipping yard.

They flooded the dark area with blindingly bright flashing red and blue lights.

Officers jumped out of their vehicles with their service weapons drawn and ready.

They spotted the dangerous sniper on the boat and immediately opened fire.

The man on the boat returned fire, creating an absolute warzone on the docks.

I held my hands tightly over Sophia's ears to protect her from the deafening noise.

Nathan crawled over to our hiding spot and wrapped his strong arms around us both.

The police finally managed to shoot the speedboat's engine, causing a small explosion.

A heavily armored SWAT team boarded the damaged vessel and arrested the wounded mercenary.

Other officers ran over to fully secure Dr. Evans, pulling him roughly to his feet.

The lead detective walked over and gently helped Nathan stand up.

He assured us that every single person involved in this deadly plot was now in custody.

I looked around the smoking docks and let out a long, exhausted breath.

We had somehow survived the most terrifying night of our entire lives.

Nathan looked deeply into my eyes and gently touched my tear-stained cheek.

He told me he owed me and Sophia his entire life and fortune.

I smiled and told him we just did what anyone else who loved him would do.

He leaned in and kissed me softly under the flashing police lights.

The moment felt absolutely perfect, like the wonderful start of a beautiful new chapter.

Then, the lead detective walked back over with a very grim look on his face.
