Chapter 1 - The Hidden Clause

Nathan stared at the life insurance document in absolute silence.
The heavy oak clock in his study ticked loudly against the quiet tension.
I stood across the mahogany desk.
I held Sophia tightly against my chest.
If Nathan married Vanessa in exactly fourteen days, his entire medical proxy shifted to her.
It meant she would have total control over his vast financial empire and his healthcare.
The clause specifically activated if he suffered a severe sensory disability after the wedding.
Deafness was explicitly listed on the third page.
Nathan slowly closed the leather folder.
His handsome face was incredibly pale and drawn.
He whispered that she had been poisoning his wine for months.
I nodded slowly.
Sophia had tried to warn us with her innocent signs.
Now we needed undeniable physical proof to stop the wedding and put Vanessa in jail.
Nathan asked me if I could get inside her private suite to search for the chemical.
I told him she left for her bridal fitting every Tuesday at noon.
The next day, I waited until her black car pulled out of the long driveway.
I slipped the master maid key into her heavy bedroom door.
The luxurious suite smelled strongly of expensive perfume and cold malice.
I searched her vanity drawers.
I checked under the plush mattress.
Finally, I found a loose floorboard in the back of her massive walk-in closet.
I pried it open with a metal nail file.
Inside was a small velvet box containing three glass vials of a clear liquid.
My heart hammered wildly in my chest.
This was the exact poison she was putting in his drink.
Suddenly, the front door of the suite clicked open.
I froze in absolute terror.
Heavy footsteps walked across the expensive bedroom carpet.
It was not Vanessa.
I peeked through the wooden slats of the closet door.
A tall man in a dark suit was standing by the bed.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
He told the person on the phone that the poison was almost gone.
He said they needed to accelerate the dosage before the maid figured it out.
May you like
He turned around, and my blood ran completely cold.
The man standing in the room was Nathan's younger brother.
