Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

I walked into the grand living room holding the printed files from Project Icarus.
Nathan was sitting on the plush velvet sofa, reviewing seating arrangements for our upcoming beach wedding. He looked up and smiled warmly, but his smile vanished the second he saw the look of absolute devastation on my face.
I threw the thick stack of papers directly onto the expensive glass coffee table. The documents scattered everywhere, exposing Arthur Cole's murderous signature.
"You knew," I screamed, my voice breaking into a heartbroken sob. "You knew your father murdered David. You knew your company poisoned my daughter!"
Nathan stood up, his face completely pale and stricken with undeniable horror. He reached out to touch me, but I violently swatted his hand away.
"Elena, please, let me explain," he begged, tears welling up in his dark eyes. "I didn't know about the hit until after David was gone. When I found out what my father did, I was completely sick to my stomach. But if I exposed it, thousands of innocent employees would lose their jobs, and my family would be ruined."
"So you buried the truth!" I shouted, pointing an accusing finger at his chest. "You bought my life with a maid's salary to make yourself feel like a savior! You lied to me every single time you looked into my eyes!"
Nathan fell to his knees on the expensive rug, completely broken. "I hired you out of guilt, yes. But I fell in love with you, Elena. Truly, deeply in love. You and Sophia are the best things that ever happened to me. I was going to spend the rest of my life making it up to you."
"You can't buy my forgiveness with a diamond ring and a garden," I whispered, the crushing weight of his betrayal suffocating me. "You are just as corrupt and monstrous as Vanessa and Dr. Evans."

I turned my back on the man I thought was the love of my life. I ran upstairs, grabbed a small suitcase, and packed only the bare essentials for me and Sophia. Nathan stood at the bottom of the grand staircase, weeping silently, but he did not try to stop me. He knew he had completely destroyed us.
I took my daughter's hand and walked out of the mansion, vowing never to return.
