Chapter 7 - The True Mastermind

Dr. Evans stepped confidently into the dim light of the shipping container.
He looked absolutely nothing like the kind, gentle physician Nathan had trusted for years.
His eyes were completely cold and devoid of any human mercy.
Nathan bravely stepped in front of me and Sophia to shield us.
He asked his doctor why he was doing this.
Dr. Evans laughed a dry, cruel, and humorless laugh.
He explained that Vanessa was never the real brains behind the operation.
She was just a greedy, easily manipulated pawn he used to get close to the Cole fortune.
Dr. Evans was the brilliant chemist who formulated the untraceable poison.
He was the one who secretly orchestrated the life insurance policy changes.
With Vanessa going to jail, he was the only one left to claim the hidden offshore accounts.
He just needed Nathan to disappear permanently tonight.
Dr. Evans pointed the heavy shotgun directly at Nathan's chest.
He said he would expertly stage the scene to look like a tragic kidnapping gone wrong.
I looked frantically around the shipping container for any kind of weapon.
There was absolutely nothing but empty wooden crates and rusty iron chains.
Sophia tugged firmly on my sleeve and signed the word for FIRE.
She pointed to a cluster of red emergency flares sitting on a shelf directly behind the doctor.
I knew exactly what my brave daughter wanted me to do.
I slowly reached into my apron pocket and pulled out my silver cigarette lighter.
I whispered a silent prayer and threw the lighter directly at the metal shelf.
The lighter struck a leaking can of highly flammable industrial solvent next to the flares.
A massive, blinding fireball suddenly erupted behind Dr. Evans.

The powerful blast knocked the doctor forward, and he dropped the heavy shotgun.
Nathan dove across the concrete floor and grabbed the weapon before the doctor could recover.
