Chapter 16 - The Unexpected Ally

I stumbled into the dark, abandoned kitchen of the bakery, clutching Sophia tightly.

When my eyes finally adjusted to the dim light slipping through the window blinds, I gasped in absolute shock. Standing in front of me, dripping wet and breathing heavily, was Nathan’s younger brother, Marcus.

"What are you doing here?" I demanded, backing away suspiciously. The last time Marcus was involved in family business, he had almost helped Vanessa kill my daughter.

Marcus held up his hands in a peaceful surrender and motioned for us to follow him to a small, secluded table in the back office. He pulled a thick, waterproof folder from his leather jacket and slid it across the table toward me.

"I've spent the last six months in rehab getting clean and realizing how deeply toxic my family truly is," Marcus explained, his voice filled with genuine regret. "When my father’s security team was scrambled tonight to hunt you down, I intercepted the radio chatter. I came to get you out."

I opened the folder hesitantly. Inside were original, signed financial documents linking Arthur Cole directly to the hitmen who murdered David.

"Nathan is weak," Marcus said bitterly. "He thought he could protect you by hiding the past. But I want to tear my father's corrupt empire down to the ground. Arthur Cole has ruined enough lives."

I looked at Marcus, searching for any sign of deception. He had risked his own life to save Sophia from Vanessa's mercenaries on the wedding day. Now, he was risking everything to help me expose his own father.

"This isn't enough to put Arthur away forever," I whispered, tapping the documents. "His expensive lawyers will claim these signatures are forged."

Marcus nodded grimly. "You're right. The only undeniable proof is the master hard drive kept in my father’s private underground vault at the downtown corporate headquarters. It contains the raw audio recordings of Arthur ordering the hit on David."

I swallowed hard, looking down at my sweet, innocent daughter. I was absolutely terrified, but I knew I could never stop running until the monster who killed my husband was behind bars.

"Then we have to break into the vault tonight," I said with fierce determination.
