Chapter 10 - A Beautiful Life
The detective looked at Nathan and formally apologized for interrupting the sweet moment.
He handed Nathan a small, encrypted hard drive found safely secured on the sniper's boat.
The detective explained it contained the complete digital confession and evidence to put them all away forever.
Nathan thanked the brave officer and tightly held my trembling hand.
Six months later, our lives looked completely different and infinitely better.
The horrific, traumatic memories of Vanessa and Dr. Evans were finally fading away.
They were both sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
Marcus went to an exclusive rehabilitation clinic and was slowly, happily rebuilding his life.
Nathan completely recovered his hearing after stopping the ingestion of the toxic poison.
He fired his corrupt staff and hired a wonderful team of people he could truly trust.
More importantly, he paid for Sophia to receive the best medical care in the entire world.
She received advanced cochlear implants and was finally learning how to speak beautiful words.
Nathan and I fell deeply in love during the peaceful, healing months of recovery.
We were getting married next week in a small, completely private ceremony on the beach.
We bought a beautiful new home with a massive green garden for Sophia to safely play in.
I watched happily from the kitchen window as Nathan pushed Sophia on the tire swing.
Her sweet, bright laughter rang out clearly across the sunny, perfect yard.
I had never felt so incredibly safe, so cherished, and so truly happy.
This was the beautiful, perfect family I had always dreamed of having.
I walked out to the metal mailbox to grab the standard morning post.
Among the normal bills was a plain white envelope with a federal prison stamp on the corner.
I tore it open and pulled out a single sheet of lined paper.
The handwriting clearly belonged to Vanessa.

"I wasn't working alone, Elena."
"Ask Nathan what really happened to your late husband."
