Chapter 5 - The Voice in the Dark

The large nursery plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.

Heavy rain lashed violently against the large glass windows of the estate.

Baby Leo began to whimper softly in his sleep due to the loud thunder.

Sarah held her breath and carefully listened to the terrifying silence of the massive house.

She heard the distinct, sharp sound of a glass window shattering somewhere downstairs.

Someone had just broken into the isolated estate.

Sarah carefully placed the baby into his crib and grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the table.

She stood silently by the door, ready to swing at anyone who tried to enter the room.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps slowly echoed up the grand wooden staircase.

The terrifying footsteps stopped right outside the locked nursery door.

Sarah gripped the brass lamp until her knuckles turned completely white.

A metal key slid smoothly into the lock from the outside hallway.

The heavy oak door slowly creaked open into the pitch-black room.

A tall silhouette stood ominously in the doorway holding a bright tactical flashlight.

"You always were entirely too brave for your own good, Agent Carter," a deep, raspy voice whispered.

Sarah froze completely in her tracks.

No one in this entire house knew her real name or her actual profession.

She was not just a simple maid looking for extra cash to pay her bills.
