Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Revealed
The kitchen was instantly flooded with Nicholas's loyal guards.
They dragged the bleeding and cursing Marcus to a steel chair and tied him down.
Nicholas stared at his mother as she casually handed the heavy shotgun to a guard.
"You have been pretending to be dying this whole time?" Nicholas asked in disbelief.
Evelyn walked over to the kitchen island and poured herself a glass of water.
"I knew there was a traitor, and I needed them to think I was no longer a threat," Evelyn explained calmly.
Claire leaned against the counter, completely stunned by the older woman's brilliant deception.
Nicholas turned his furious gaze back to the tied-up traitor.
"Who paid you to poison my mother, Marcus?" Nicholas growled, pressing his gun to the man's knee.
Marcus laughed, spitting a wad of blood onto the pristine floor.
"You really think a rival family orchestrated this?" Marcus mocked.
Suddenly, Marcus's encrypted cell phone began to ring loudly from his jacket pocket.
Nicholas reached in and pulled the phone out, looking at the caller ID.

The name on the screen made Nicholas drop his gun in pure horror.
It was Don Roberto Caruso, Nicholas's father, who had supposedly died in a car bombing five years ago.
