Chapter 5 - The Blazing Trap
The cold bit into Claire's skin like thousands of tiny needles.
Her breath plumed in the air as she frantically searched the metal shelves.
She needed a heat source to survive the plummeting temperature.
She found a large bottle of high-proof cooking rum and a box of wooden matches meant for the gas stove.
Claire poured the alcohol over a pile of cardboard delivery boxes in the center of the concrete floor.
She struck a match with shivering fingers and tossed it onto the pile.
A bright, warm fire instantly roared to life inside the sealed freezer.
The sudden spike in temperature triggered the internal fire suppression system.
The automated alarms began screaming throughout the entire Caruso estate.
The heavy freezer door automatically unlocked and popped open to allow emergency access.
Claire stumbled out into the kitchen, coughing heavily from the smoke.
Nicholas rushed into the kitchen with his gun drawn, looking terrified.
"What happened?" Nicholas yelled over the blaring alarms.
Claire pointed a shaking finger directly at Marcus, who had just run into the room.
"He locked me in there, and he is the one who poisoned your mother!" Claire shouted.
