Chapter 19 - The Garage Trap

Claire moved silently through the dark corridors of the Caruso estate, slipping from shadow to shadow like a ghost. Through a small earpiece she had grabbed from the security room, Nicholas's calm, steady voice guided her every step.

"Two men approaching from the east corridor," Nicholas whispered in her ear. "Duck into the library, now."

Claire silently rolled into the grand library just as heavy combat boots stomped past the doorway. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands remained perfectly steady. She navigated the maze of the mansion flawlessly, relying entirely on the man she had originally been sent to destroy.

"You are clear to the garage," Nicholas finally said.

Claire pushed through the heavy fire doors and entered the massive, dimly lit underground garage. Nicholas’s armored luxury sedan sat in the center, gleaming under the pale fluorescent lights.

Claire deliberately kicked a metal trash can, sending a loud, echoing crash ringing through the concrete structure.

"She's in the garage! Move! Move!" a voice yelled from the stairwell.

Claire dove behind the front tire of the armored sedan just as the heavy doors burst open. Agent Vance strutted into the garage, flanked by four corrupt tactical agents with their assault rifles raised.

"It's over, Donnelly!" Vance shouted, his voice echoing loudly. "There is no way out. The steel shutters are locked down."

Right on cue, Nicholas activated the automated garage controls from the security room. The massive exterior garage doors began to slowly grind open, revealing the dark, rainy night outside.

Vance laughed arrogantly, assuming Claire was trying to make a desperate escape.

"You think you can outrun us on foot?" Vance mocked, stepping closer to the passenger side of the armored sedan, stopping exactly where Claire had planted the hidden microphone.

Claire stayed hidden behind the tire, praying the tiny device was picking up his voice clearly.

"Why are you doing this, Vance?" Claire yelled from her hiding spot, intentionally baiting him. "The FBI will find out!"

"The FBI is a joke!" Vance sneered loudly, standing directly over the hidden bug. "The Bureau pays me a miserable government salary to chase ghosts. The Moretti family paid me five million dollars in untraceable crypto to put a bullet in Nicholas Caruso's head tonight. And they paid me an extra million to ensure the beautiful undercover agent died in the crossfire."

Vance smiled wickedly, raising his weapon and pointing it at the tire where Claire was hiding.

"When this is over, my report will say Nicholas Caruso killed you, and my brave team had to put him down. I am going to be a hero, Claire."

"Actually," a deep voice echoed from the open garage door.

Vance spun around in shock.

Nicholas Caruso stood in the pouring rain, holding an assault rifle perfectly leveled at Vance’s chest. Behind Nicholas, the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of authentic, non-corrupt FBI vehicles flooded the driveway.

"Your entire confession just broadcasted live to the Director of the FBI," Nicholas said coldly.

Vance dropped his gun in absolute, horrified defeat.
