Chapter 18 - The Digital Confession

The security control room was bathed in the eerie blue glow of dozens of surveillance monitors. On the screens, Claire could see Vance and his heavily armed, corrupt agents frantically searching the mansion room by room.

Nicholas sat at the main terminal, his fingers flying rapidly across the keyboard. He triggered the estate’s maximum lockdown protocol. Massive steel shutters slammed down over every window and door in the mansion, trapping Vance's team inside with them.

"My men in the city have been alerted," Nicholas said, his voice grim. "They will be here in twenty minutes. But Vance will try to breach this room before they arrive."

Evelyn sat calmly in a rolling office chair, casually reloading her antique shotgun with lethal slugs.

Claire paced the small room, her mind racing. "Even if your men kill Vance, the FBI will classify it as a mob hit on a federal agent. The government will hunt you to the ends of the earth. We have to prove Vance is corrupt before he dies."

"How?" Nicholas asked, turning to face her. "He isn't exactly going to confess on tape."

Claire looked at her empty hands. She had destroyed her FBI phone. But then she remembered the listening device she had planted in Nicholas’s car the night before.

"Nicholas, is your car still parked in the garage?" Claire asked urgently.

"Yes, why?"

"I planted an FBI audio bug under the passenger seat," Claire admitted, blushing slightly with shame. "The feed is directly connected to the FBI central servers in Washington. It is a live, unhackable government stream."

Nicholas’s eyes widened with sudden comprehension. "If we can get Vance into that garage, and get him talking..."

"The entire FBI headquarters will hear a corrupt agent admitting he works for the Moretti crime family," Claire finished, a spark of dangerous hope igniting in her chest.

"It is a suicide mission," Evelyn interjected sharply. "The garage is on the other side of the estate. You will have to fight through a dozen heavily armed tactical agents just to get to the car."

"I am highly trained in tactical evasion," Claire said confidently, checking the magazine of her stolen pistol. "I can draw them into the garage. But I need you to trigger the garage doors to open once I am inside, so Vance thinks he has me trapped."

Nicholas stood up, walking over to Claire. He gently took her face in his hands, his dark eyes filled with absolute terror at the thought of losing her.

"I cannot let you do this alone, Claire," Nicholas whispered, pressing his forehead against hers.

"You aren't," Claire smiled bravely, tears shining in her eyes. "You are going to monitor the cameras and guide me through the blind spots. We are doing this together."

Nicholas kissed her deeply, a desperate, passionate promise of survival.

Claire checked her weapon one last time, took a deep breath, and manually opened the heavy steel door of the control room. She stepped out into the dark, dangerous hallway, ready to play the most deadly game of hide-and-seek of her entire life.
