Chapter 12 - The Midnight Shadow

Claire froze in absolute terror. Her breath hitched in her throat as a heavy fist knocked on the locked study door.
"Claire? Are you in there?" Nicholas's deep voice echoed through the thick wood.
Panic surged through her veins like ice water. She quickly shoved the black leather ledger back into the metal safe and slammed the heavy door shut. She pushed the mahogany bookshelf back into its original position, praying it didn't make a sound.
"Just a moment, Nicholas!" Claire called out, desperately trying to keep her voice steady and calm.
She ruffled her hair slightly, grabbed a feather duster from a nearby cleaning cart she had brought with her, and quickly unlocked the study door.
Nicholas stood in the hallway, looking slightly confused but mostly concerned. He was wearing a tailored charcoal suit that made his broad shoulders look incredibly imposing.
"The door was locked," Nicholas noted softly, his dark eyes scanning the room behind her.
"I am so sorry," Claire lied smoothly, offering him an apologetic smile. "The wind blew a massive stack of papers off the desk, and I locked the door so the draft from the hallway wouldn't scatter them further while I cleaned."
Nicholas stepped into the room, his gaze lingering on her flushed face. The intense proximity made Claire's heart race for entirely different reasons. He reached out and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was warm and incredibly gentle.
"You work too hard, Claire," he whispered, stepping even closer. "You just saved my family from a violent siege. You do not need to be dusting my father's old books."
"I like keeping busy," she replied, her voice dropping to a breathless whisper. "It helps me forget the chaos."
Nicholas looked down at her lips, and for a terrifying, wonderful second, Claire thought he was going to kiss her. She wanted him to. The FBI, the ledger, and her entire undercover mission completely vanished from her mind when he was this close.
"Have dinner with me tonight," Nicholas said suddenly. "Not as my employee. As my guest. I want to take you somewhere special."
Claire swallowed the massive lump of guilt in her throat. She was a federal agent actively gathering evidence to put this man in prison, and she was about to accept a romantic date with him.
"I would love that," Claire said softly.
Nicholas smiled brightly, the heavy burden of running a mafia empire seemingly lifting from his shoulders for just a moment. He kissed her gently on the cheek and walked away, leaving Claire standing alone in the study.

As soon as his footsteps faded away, Claire locked the door again. She went back to the hidden bookshelf, opened the safe, and pulled out the black ledger. She used a specialized micro-camera to photograph every single page of the illicit financial records.
When she was finished, she put the ledger back exactly as she found it. She walked out of the study feeling like an absolute monster. She was going to wear a beautiful dress tonight, smile across a candlelit table, and know that she had just handed the FBI everything they needed to destroy his life.
