Chapter 14 - The Whispering Walls

The morning after the perfect rooftop dinner, the Caruso estate was thrown into absolute chaos.

Claire woke up to the sound of men shouting in the courtyard. She threw on her clothes and rushed downstairs. Nicholas was standing in the foyer, his face dark with fury, surrounded by a dozen armed guards.

"How did the feds know about the warehouse?" Nicholas roared, slamming his fist against a marble pillar. "That shipment was entirely off the books! Only four people in this entire organization knew that address!"

Claire stopped dead in her tracks on the staircase. The FBI had used the photographs she took from the black ledger to raid one of Nicholas’s primary storage facilities overnight. They hadn't even waited for the final audio confirmation. Agent Vance was moving aggressively, ignoring standard protocols.

Nicholas looked up and saw Claire on the stairs. His angry expression instantly softened, and he instructed his guards to leave the house and secure the perimeter.

"I am sorry you had to hear that," Nicholas sighed, running an exhausted hand through his dark hair. "We had a major security breach last night. The federal authorities raided a facility I was in the process of dismantling."

Before Claire could comfort him, Evelyn Caruso walked slowly out of the formal drawing room. The elderly woman leaned heavily on her silver cane, but her eyes were as sharp and terrifying as broken glass.

"A security breach does not happen by accident, Nicholas," Evelyn said coldly, her piercing gaze locking directly onto Claire. "It happens when a rat finds its way into the walls."

Claire felt a cold sweat break out on the back of her neck. Evelyn was incredibly perceptive. She had played her own husband for a fool for months.

"Mother, do not start this," Nicholas warned, stepping between Claire and his mother. "My inner circle is tight. The leak came from the street level."

"Did it?" Evelyn challenged, taking a slow step toward Claire. "The FBI knew the exact unit number, the exact time of the transfer, and the exact vault combination. That is not street-level gossip, Nicholas. That is inside knowledge."

Evelyn stopped just inches from Claire. The older woman smelled of expensive floral perfume and dangerous intuition.

"I trust you, Claire," Evelyn whispered softly, though the words sounded exactly like a threat. "You saved my life. But if I ever find out that someone in this house is betraying my son, I will not wait for the authorities to handle it. I will personally serve them their final meal."

Claire swallowed hard and nodded respectfully. "I understand, Mrs. Caruso. I would never let anyone hurt Nicholas."

Evelyn smiled a thin, chilling smile and walked away.

Claire rushed back to her room and locked the door. She pulled out the encrypted phone and frantically typed a message to Agent Vance.

"You moved too fast! They know there is a mole. Pull back immediately or you will compromise my cover."

The response from Vance came back less than ten seconds later.

"Your cover is irrelevant now, Agent Donnelly. We are raiding the main estate tonight at midnight. Get out of the house, or you will be arrested with the rest of them."
