Chapter 11 - The Second Face

Claire stared at the glowing screen of her encrypted phone in the dark silence of her bedroom. The name Agent Donnelly felt completely alien to her now. For six months, she had lived, breathed, and nearly died as Claire the chef. She had sliced vegetables, baked breads, and slowly embedded herself into the very heartbeat of the Caruso crime family.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she typed a single letter in response. "Acknowledged."

She shoved the phone back into the false bottom of her suitcase and fell back onto her plush mattress. The FBI had sent her in with one clear objective: find the hidden financial ledgers that linked the Caruso family to decades of international smuggling, extortion, and political bribery. Don Roberto was in custody, but the empire was still fully functional under Nicholas.

The problem was that Nicholas Caruso was nothing like his brutal father.

Claire closed her eyes, and all she could see was the raw, genuine affection in his dark eyes when he had asked her to stay. He had shielded her during the gunfight. He had trusted her with his mother’s life. She was falling in love with the exact man she was sworn to put in a federal penitentiary.

The next morning, the sprawling estate was buzzing with a renewed, cautious energy. As the newly appointed Head of Hospitality, Claire had unrestricted access to almost every wing of the mansion. Her handler at the Bureau, Agent Vance, had sent her a new set of instructions overnight. She needed to access the private study that once belonged to Roberto, which was now Nicholas's personal office.

Claire dressed carefully in a sleek, professional black uniform. She walked down the grand mahogany staircase, her heart pounding a steady, anxious rhythm against her ribs.

Nicholas was sitting in the formal dining room, sipping a cup of dark espresso. He looked up as she entered, and a warm, breathtaking smile instantly transformed his sharp, handsome features.

"Good morning, Claire," Nicholas said softly, setting his porcelain cup down. "You look beautiful today."

"Thank you, Nicholas," Claire replied, forcing a polite smile while guilt twisted violently in her stomach. "I was planning to do a complete inventory of the east wing today, including the private offices. I want to make sure the cleaning staff hasn't overlooked anything during the transition."

Nicholas nodded without a single trace of suspicion. "Of course. You have my full permission. Just be careful in my father's old study. We haven't finished clearing out all of his personal belongings."

Claire felt a sharp pang of self-hatred as she thanked him and walked away. She was using his absolute trust as a weapon against him.

She made her way to the east wing, ensuring none of the armed guards were following her. She slipped a specialized electronic key card from her sleeve and pressed it against the security scanner of the private study. The heavy oak door clicked open.

Claire stepped inside and locked the door behind her. She had less than twenty minutes before the perimeter guards made their standard rounds. She immediately began searching for the hidden safe Agent Vance had described.

She checked behind the massive oil paintings and under the heavy Persian rug. Finally, she noticed a faint scuff mark on the hardwood floor near a heavy mahogany bookshelf. She reached behind the leather-bound books and felt a small, hidden lever.

The bookshelf swung open with a quiet hiss, revealing a state-of-the-art biometric wall safe.

Claire pulled a specialized silicone fingerprint film from her pocket. She had secretly lifted Nicholas's thumbprint from a wine glass the night before. She pressed the film against the scanner. A green light flashed, and the safe unlocked.

Inside sat a small, black leather ledger. The Holy Grail of the FBI's decade-long investigation.

Claire reached out to grab it, but suddenly, the heavy oak door of the study rattled. Someone was trying to get in.
