The kitchen fell into a deadly standoff despite the screaming fire alarms.
Marcus held his gun perfectly steady.
"Drop your weapon, Nicholas, or the cook dies first," Marcus threatened.
Nicholas hesitated, his eyes darting toward Claire.
"Why are you doing this, Marcus?" Nicholas demanded, keeping his gun raised.
"Because the Caruso era is over," Marcus sneered.
Marcus slowly moved his finger to the trigger.
Claire grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the counter and prepared to swing it.
Before anyone could move, a deafening shotgun blast shattered the kitchen window.
Marcus screamed as the gun was blown entirely out of his hand.
He collapsed to the floor, clutching his bleeding wrist in agony.
Nicholas spun around to face the kitchen doorway, ready to shoot the unknown attacker.
His jaw dropped in absolute shock.
Evelyn Caruso stood in the doorway, holding a smoking, antique double-barreled shotgun.
She was not trembling.
She was not weak.

Evelyn pumped the shotgun with a terrifying, practiced efficiency.
"Nobody locks my chef in a freezer," Evelyn declared fiercely.
