Chapter 9 - The Final Countdown
Dominic moved with terrifying speed, slashing the combat knife brutally across Volkov's forearm.
The Russian boss roared in agonizing pain, dropping his useless, unloaded pistol to the hardwood floor.
Dominic grabbed Volkov by the throat and slammed him violently against the massive mahogany desk.
"Where is the boy?" Dominic demanded, his eyes wide with absolute, lethal intent.
"He is safe in the nursery," Sophie whispered, running quickly to Dominic's side.
Volkov laughed, a wet, bloody sound that sent absolute shivers down Sophie's spine.
"You fools think you can just walk out of my impenetrable fortress?" Volkov spat defiance.
He reached under the desk with his uninjured hand and smashed a hidden red emergency button.
Deafening alarms immediately began blaring throughout the massive penthouse suite.
"I rigged this entire floor with enough C4 explosives to level a city block," Volkov grinned maliciously.
A digital voice echoed over the intercom system, completely emotionless and terrifying.
"Detonation in sixty seconds."
Dominic punched Volkov square in the face, knocking the mobster completely unconscious.
"Go get the boy, right now!" Dominic shouted over the blaring security sirens.
Sophie sprinted down the hallway, her bare feet slipping dangerously on the polished marble floors.
She burst into the nursery, scooped up the sleeping baby, and wrapped him tightly in a heavy fire blanket.
She ran back to the living room, where Dominic was desperately trying to hack the primary elevator panel.
"Thirty seconds," the automated voice announced with chilling calm.
"The elevator is completely locked down," Dominic cursed, smashing his bleeding fist against the metal doors.
He looked wildly at the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the raging river hundreds of feet below.
"Hold onto the boy and do not let go," Dominic ordered, grabbing a heavy bronze statue from a pedestal.
May you like
"Ten seconds."
Dominic hurled the statue at the reinforced glass with all of his remaining strength.
