Chapter 4 - The Underground

The armored sedan shot forward just as a massive concrete pillar smashed into the ground behind them.

Dust and heavy debris rained down on the roof as Dominic violently steered toward the exit tunnel.

Sophie coughed aggressively, leaning over the baby's seat to protect him from the shaking vehicle.

They burst out of the hidden tunnel into the chaotic, rainy streets of Chicago.

Sirens wailed in the distance as massive flames shot up from the Moretti estate into the night sky.

Dominic gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned completely white.

"Who did this?" Sophie asked, her voice barely a whisper over the roaring engine.

"The Volkov Syndicate," Dominic replied, his tone as cold as winter ice.

He drove erratically, taking sharp turns down dark alleyways to aggressively shake any pursuit.

They arrived at an abandoned warehouse on the dark edge of the industrial district.

Dominic parked the car in the shadows and pulled out a heavy assault rifle from the trunk.

"Stay behind me and keep the boy perfectly quiet," he commanded.

They moved silently through the damp, rat-infested building toward a rusted freight elevator.

Suddenly, a blinding spotlight hit them from the high metal catwalks.

"End of the line, Moretti," a dark voice echoed through the vast warehouse.

Dozens of heavily armed men stepped out of the shadows, aiming red laser sights directly at Dominic's chest.

Sophie gasped in pure horror as she finally recognized the man leading the ambush.

It was Detective Miller, the corrupt cop who had investigated her own son's tragic death four years ago.

He smiled a sick, twisted smile as he pointed his weapon straight at Sophie.

"Well, well, if it isn't the grieving mother who always asked way too many questions."
