Chapter 5 - The Bleeding Heart

Dominic did not hesitate for a single, fatal second.

He fired a blinding burst from his rifle into the spotlight and grabbed Sophie by the waist.

He threw her behind a massive stack of steel shipping crates just as bullets tore through the air.

The warehouse erupted into a deafening war zone of flying lead and shattering concrete.

"Run to the elevator!" Dominic yelled fiercely over the relentless gunfire.

Sophie clutched the baby and sprinted through the darkness, her lungs burning with intense panic.

She hit the rusty elevator button repeatedly, praying it would open before Detective Miller's men caught them.

Dominic backed away slowly, laying down heavy suppressive fire to keep the corrupt cops pinned down.

The metal doors screeched open, and Sophie threw herself inside the small cabin.

Dominic dove through the closing doors just as a bullet caught him violently in the side.

He collapsed onto the metal floor, groaning in deep, agonizing pain.

The elevator plunged downward into complete darkness, taking them deep underground.

Sophie laid the crying baby on a soft jacket and ripped open Dominic's blood-soaked shirt.

"I have medical training, you have to let me stop this bleeding," she ordered with fierce authority.

Dominic was incredibly pale, sweating profusely as his dark eyes rolled back in his head.

Sophie pressed her hands hard against the gunshot wound, applying desperate, heavy pressure.

Dominic grabbed her wrist weakly, his breathing becoming terribly shallow and rapid.

"If I die, you take the boy and you run straight to Mexico," he choked out.

"You are not dying tonight," Sophie snapped, fighting back her own panicked tears.

Dominic pulled her closer, his voice dropping to a harsh, wet whisper.

"You have to protect him, Sophie, because he is not my son."
