Chapter 6 - The Dark Truth

The elevator crashed to a violent halt at the bottom of the hidden shaft.

Sophie dragged Dominic into a dusty, subterranean safehouse illuminated only by dim emergency lights.

She worked feverishly, using a military first-aid kit from the wall to pack his wound and stitch the torn flesh.

The baby slept soundly on a nearby cot, completely exhausted from the endless chaos.

Hours passed before Dominic finally opened his eyes, groggy and in immense, throbbing pain.

"You saved my life," he whispered, staring at her with a new, profound respect.

Sophie wiped her bloody hands on a towel and crossed her arms sternly.

"You said the boy is not yours."

Dominic sighed heavily, the heavy burden of his dark secrets finally breaking him down.

"He is my nephew."

He slowly sat up, wincing sharply as the fresh stitches pulled at his skin.

"My younger sister fell in love with Alexander Volkov, the ruthless head of the Russian syndicate."

Sophie gasped loudly, suddenly understanding the terrifying scale of the war they were trapped in.

"When Volkov found out she was pregnant, he demanded the child be raised as his violent heir."

Dominic looked over at the sleeping baby with an overwhelming, heartbreaking sadness.

"My sister tried to run, but Volkov murdered her yesterday to take the baby."

Sophie realized Dominic was not a monster; he was a grieving uncle desperately trying to protect his blood.

"We have to get him out of the country," Sophie said with absolute, fierce determination.

Before Dominic could agree, the heavy steel door of the safehouse groaned under a massive, explosive impact.

Someone had tracked the elevator down to their secret, underground bunker.
