Chapter 3 - The Traitor

Sophie screamed and threw herself backward, shielding the baby with her own body.

A loud gunshot shattered the heavy tension in the nursery.

Sophie squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the burning pain, but absolutely nothing happened.

She opened her eyes to see the housekeeper crumbling lifelessly to the floor.

Dominic stood in the doorway, a smoking gun in his hand, his face completely devoid of emotion.

"Clean this up," he ordered the guards rushing up the stairs behind him.

He walked over to Sophie, who was shaking uncontrollably on the floor.

"Are you or the boy hurt?" he asked, his voice surprisingly gentle.

"She tried to poison him," Sophie whispered, hot tears streaming down her face.

Dominic knelt beside her, his dark eyes filling with a terrifying, absolute rage.

"They have infiltrated my inner circle."

He gently touched the baby's head, showing a raw vulnerability Sophie had not expected from a monster.

"I cannot trust anyone in this house anymore, except for you."

He stood up and pulled Sophie to her feet by her elbow.

"Pack whatever you need from this room in the next two minutes."

"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice trembling with fear.

"We are leaving the city tonight."

They hurried down a secret back staircase into a dimly lit underground garage.

Dominic strapped the baby's car seat into an unmarked, armored sedan.

The concrete ceiling of the garage began to crack and collapse right on top of their car.
