Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The heavy reinforced glass shattered into a million sparkling pieces against the dark night sky.

Dominic grabbed Sophie tightly around the waist, pulling her and the baby firmly against his chest.

They sprinted toward the broken window and leaped out into the freezing, empty darkness.

A massive explosion ripped through the penthouse above them, sending a wave of incredible heat down their backs.

They plummeted rapidly toward the dark, freezing waters of the Chicago river below.

Dominic twisted his body in mid-air to take the brutal, crushing impact of the water.

They crashed beneath the surface, the freezing cold shocking the air completely out of Sophie's lungs.

She kicked upward desperately, breaking the surface and gasping for oxygen while holding the baby safely high.

Dominic emerged beside her, pulling them toward a small, hidden speedboat waiting in the shadows under the bridge.

His most loyal men pulled them aboard and immediately sped off into the endless dark water.

The dangerous Volkov empire had burned entirely to the ground, and the Moretti family was completely scattered.

Dominic looked at Sophie shivering safely in the boat, holding his precious nephew securely in her arms.

He knew he could never go back to the violent, bloody life of a mafia boss.

Six months later, the bright sun shone beautifully on a small, quiet farmhouse in rural Montana.

Sophie laughed happily as she watched little Leo take his first wobbly steps across the soft green grass.

Dominic walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and kissing her cheek tenderly.

They had left the dark underworld behind forever to build a beautiful, peaceful family of their own.

The terrible nightmare was finally over, and they had found their perfect happy ending.

Sophie walked down to the porch to collect the morning mail from the wooden box.

Beneath the stack of normal bills, she found a small, unmarked black velvet box.

She opened it carefully and felt her heart completely stop dead in her chest.

Inside rested a dead black rose and a handwritten note that simply read, "Did you miss me, darling?"

The handwriting belonged flawlessly to her abusive ex-husband, a man she had personally buried four years ago.
