Chapter 1 - The Magic Touch

"Colic is not an enemy you can shoot, Mister Moretti."

Sophie kept her voice steady as she swayed her hips in a gentle figure eight.

The baby let out one final, exhausted shudder and closed his eyes.

Silence crashed over the upscale restaurant like a falling building.

Dominic stared at her as if she had just performed dark magic in front of him.

He looked at the sleeping infant and then slowly back up at her face.

"You are coming with us."

Sophie froze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"I have a shift to finish, and I am not a nanny."

Dominic stood up, buttoning his expensive charcoal jacket with precise movements.

"You were a waitress five minutes ago, but now you belong to me."

Mister Halpern rushed forward from the shadows, his hands trembling violently.

"Please, sir, she meant no disrespect to you or your family."

One of the massive bodyguards shoved the manager back against the wall effortlessly.

"I will pay you ten thousand dollars a week to live in my house," Dominic said softly.

"I do not want your dirty money," Sophie fired back before she could stop herself.

The entire dining room inhaled sharply at her suicidal bravery.

Dominic leaned in so close she could smell his rich cologne and the faint metallic scent of gunpowder.

"The boy’s mother was murdered this morning."

Sophie felt a cold, terrifying chill race down her spine.

"The people who killed her will come for him next, and you are the only person who can keep him quiet enough to stay alive."
