Chapter 8 - The Trap

Elena squinted against the blinding light.

She climbed up the metal stairs to the main deck of the yacht.

She was completely unarmed, shivering, and surrounded by ocean.

Victoria sat in a luxurious lounge chair under a waterproof canopy.

Little Leo was sitting on a sofa nearby, looking terrified but unharmed.

"Mom!" Leo cried, trying to run to her.

Two guards immediately stepped in front of the boy, blocking his path.

"Do not touch him!" Elena screamed.

Victoria sipped a glass of champagne and smiled.

"You are incredibly persistent, Elena."

"But persistence is not enough to win."

Victoria tossed a digital tablet onto a glass table in front of Elena.

"The paper deeds were just a formality."

"I need your biometric signature on this digital transfer to lock the international accounts."

"Sign it, and I will put you and the boy on a life raft."

Elena looked at the dark, churning ocean waves.

She knew Victoria would never leave them alive to tell the truth.

"Let Leo get on the raft first," Elena demanded.

Victoria nodded to her guards.

They deployed a small, inflatable raft into the water and let Leo climb down the ladder.

Elena watched her son safely reach the raft.

She pressed her thumb against the scanner on the tablet.

The screen flashed green, confirming the transfer of billions of dollars.

"Thank you," Victoria laughed.

"Now, shoot her," Victoria ordered her guards.

The men raised their rifles.

Elena did not run, and she did not beg for her life.

She simply smiled.

"I told you on the rooftop that you made a huge mistake," Elena said quietly.
