Chapter 4 - The Ransom

Elena stared at the horrifying video on her phone.
Her father looked exhausted and terrified.
Victoria's cold voice played over the audio track.
"You have one hour to bring the master deeds to the old shipyard."
"If you involve the police, he dies."
Elena shoved the phone into her pocket.
Her hands were shaking, but her mind was completely focused.
She picked up Leo and ran down the emergency stairs of the warehouse.
They hit the street level and disappeared into the dark city alleys.
Elena knew she could not bring Leo to a hostage exchange.
She stopped at a small, twenty-four-hour diner.
She called her best friend, Sarah, who lived nearby.
Sarah arrived ten minutes later, looking frantic.
"Keep him safe, please," Elena begged, handing Leo over.
"I will be back for you soon, baby," she promised her crying son.
Elena watched Sarah drive away with Leo before stealing a parked delivery truck.
She drove furiously toward the financial district.
The master deeds were locked inside a secure vault at the central bank.
She used her override codes to bypass the night security guards.
She descended into the underground bunker of the bank.
The massive steel vault door opened perfectly for her biometric scan.
She grabbed the leather folder containing the legal documents.
As she turned to leave, the vault door suddenly slammed shut.
The heavy lock clicked into place, sealing her inside.

The bank manager's voice echoed through the intercom.
"I am sorry, Elena, but Victoria pays much better than you do."
