Chapter 5 - The Vault

The air inside the steel vault was incredibly cold.

Elena slammed her fists against the impenetrable metal door.

"Let me out of here!" she screamed.

The bank manager did not respond.

Elena knew the oxygen in the airtight room would only last a few hours.

She checked her watch and realized she only had forty minutes left to save her father.

She forced herself to stop panicking and think logically.

This was her company's primary banking facility.

She had personally designed the emergency fail-safes five years ago.

She walked over to the electrical panel on the back wall.

She pulled a hairclip from her messy hair and bent the metal.

She pried the cover off the panel to expose the main wiring matrix.

Her fingers flew across the colored wires, re-routing the power grid.

She caused a deliberate short circuit in the internal cooling system.

The vault's safety protocol instantly triggered a fire hazard override.

The heavy steel door popped open with a loud hiss.

Elena sprinted out of the vault and grabbed the leather folder.

She ran up the stairs and burst through the front doors of the bank.

She jumped back into the delivery truck and sped toward the shipyard.

Rain began to pour down as she arrived at the abandoned docks.

She saw Victoria standing on a wooden pier holding a detonator switch.

Her father was tied to a chair at the end of the dock.

Elena held up the leather folder and stepped out of the truck.

"I have the papers!" Elena yelled over the storm.

Victoria smiled and pressed the detonator button anyway.
