Chapter 7 - The Chase

Elena stared down the barrel of the handgun.
The woman she had trusted for ten years had completely sold her out.
"Why are you doing this, Sarah?" Elena asked, her voice shaking.
"Victoria paid off all my gambling debts," Sarah replied coldly.
Sarah kept her eyes on the wet road while holding the gun steady.
She drove them toward the industrial bridge leading out of the city.
Elena knew she had to act before they reached their destination.
She waited for Sarah to navigate a sharp, slippery turn.
Elena suddenly kicked the steering wheel with her heavy boot.
The car spun wildly out of control on the wet asphalt.
It crashed violently into the metal guardrail of the bridge.
The airbag deployed, smashing into Sarah's face and knocking her unconscious.
Elena quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and kicked her jammed door open.
She grabbed Sarah's phone from the dashboard and sprinted into the rain.
She unlocked the phone and found a recent text message from Victoria.
The message read that Leo was being held on Victoria's private yacht at the south marina.
Elena flagged down a passing taxi and threw a hundred-dollar bill at the driver.
"The south marina, right now!" she commanded.
The taxi raced through the flooded city streets.
They arrived at the docks just as the massive luxury yacht began to pull away.
Elena did not hesitate for a single second.
She ran to the end of the pier and jumped into the freezing black water.
She swam desperately toward the moving ship.
She grabbed the metal rungs of the emergency ladder trailing behind the boat.
She pulled herself up onto the lower deck, completely soaked and shivering.
As she climbed over the railing, a bright spotlight hit her face.

Victoria was standing on the upper deck with a vicious smile.
"I have been waiting for you," Victoria announced.
