Chapter 1 - The Titanium Badge

The darkness swallowed the moment as the grandmother pulled her hand from her heavy winter coat.
When the overhead cabin lights flickered back on, the entire airplane saw exactly what she was holding.
It was not a weapon or a phone.
It was a solid black titanium badge bearing the classified insignia of the Department of Defense.
The flight attendant stared at the heavy metal seal as the color completely drained from her arrogant face.
Evelyn did not look like a helpless, fragile grandmother anymore.
Her posture was perfectly straight, and her eyes held the cold, calculating authority of a veteran military commander.
She looked directly at the trembling attendant and demanded the stolen medicine back immediately.
The attendant took a terrified step backward and bumped violently into the metal beverage cart.
She stuttered nervously, claiming that she did not know what the old woman was talking about.
Little Leo pointed a shaking finger directly at the attendant's uniform pocket.
He told his grandmother that the mean lady had hidden his father's glass vial right there.
Evelyn stepped forward, her intense presence dominating the narrow, cramped aisle.
She warned the flight attendant that the vial contained a highly unstable, synthesized cure that was the only thing keeping her son alive.
The passengers watched in stunned silence as the flight attendant slowly reached a hand into her pocket.
But instead of handing over the medicine, the attendant pulled out a secure, military-grade radio transmitter.
She pressed a glowing red button on the device and whispered a single chilling code word into the microphone.
Evelyn lunged forward to grab the woman, but a deafening mechanical grinding noise suddenly interrupted her.
The airplane violently jolted forward, knocking several standing passengers completely off their feet.
The heavy boarding bridge was forcibly detached from the aircraft without any authorization from the control tower.
The massive jet engines roared to maximum thrust, pressing everyone backward into their cramped seats.
Through the small cabin windows, the terminal building blurred past as the commercial plane illegally accelerated down the tarmac.
The captain's voice echoed through the intercom system with a terrifying and unnatural calmness.
He announced that they were taking off immediately, and anyone who stood up would be executed.
Evelyn looked down the long aisle and realized they were now trapped inside a flying metal cage.

The flight attendant smiled wickedly and tossed the titanium badge onto the carpeted floor.
She reached beneath the beverage cart, pulled out a hidden ceramic pistol, and aimed it directly at Evelyn's chest.
