Chapter 3 - The Cellar

Serena let out a dramatic sigh of relief.

She loudly accused Lily of making up stories to save her own life.

Victor's face was an unreadable mask of cold stone.

He did not shoot Lily.

Instead, he ordered his men to lock her in the basement holding cell.

He promised he would deal with her personally in twenty-four hours.

Two massive guards dragged Lily down into the dark, damp cellar.

They threw her onto the concrete floor and locked the heavy iron door.

Lily curled into a ball and wept for poor baby Ethan.

She knew Serena was going to hurt the child again.

Hours passed in the suffocating darkness of the basement.

Suddenly, Lily heard muffled voices coming from the air vent above her.

She quietly stacked two wooden crates and pressed her ear to the metal grate.

It was Serena talking to a man with a deep, unfamiliar voice.

The man asked if the poison was ready.

Serena laughed and said it was already mixed into Victor's evening whiskey.

She bragged that Victor would be dead before midnight.

She added that the crying baby would be sold to the highest bidder tomorrow.

Lily's blood ran completely cold.

She had to get out of this cage.

She pushed against the metal grate with all her strength.

The rusty screws groaned, but they did not break.

Heavy footsteps began to approach her cellar door.
