Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I left the hospital and drove straight to my sister’s apartment.
Claire and I had never been close, but I never thought she was capable of murder.
I kicked the front door open, not caring about the noise.
Claire was frantically packing a suitcase on her bed.
She spun around, her face dropping when she saw me standing there.
I demanded to know why she tried to kill my child.
Claire started crying, saying Mark had forced her into it.
He promised to split the two million dollar insurance payout with her to save her from bankruptcy.
She reached under her mattress and pulled out a silver handgun.
She pointed it directly at my chest, apologizing through her tears.
I closed my eyes, waiting for the gunshot.
A loud blast echoed through the room, but I didn't feel any pain.

Claire dropped the gun and fell to the floor, clutching her bleeding shoulder.
Chloe was standing in the doorway behind me, holding a smoking revolver.
