Chapter 1 - The Sirens

“Ma’am?” the dispatcher repeated.

“They need to hurry,” I whispered.

I kept my hand on Lily’s chest, feeling the weak, terrifying flutter of her heart.

Downstairs, Mark’s laugh echoed again, followed by the clinking of wine glasses.

He had no idea I was home from my business trip two days early.

He had no idea his teenage daughter was dying on the floor right above his romantic dinner.

Red and blue lights suddenly flashed through the bedroom window.

The paramedics rushed through the unlocked front door before I even had to ask.

Heavy boots pounded up the stairs.

Two medics burst into the room and immediately took over.

Mark appeared in the doorway, a half-empty glass of Merlot in his hand.

His face drained of color when he saw the oxygen mask going over Lily’s face.

A young woman in a backless red dress pushed past him, gasping in horror.

“Sarah, what is going on?” Mark stammered, dropping his wine glass onto the hardwood floor.

I ignored him and watched the medic check Lily’s pockets for anything that could help.

The medic pulled out a second, smaller prescription bottle.

He read the label aloud.

“Oxycodone, prescribed to a Chloe Adams,” he said.

The woman in the red dress backed away, her eyes wide with terror.
