Chapter 3 - The Confession
The detective pulled Mark into a private consultation room.
I stood by the door, listening through the thin glass.
Mark’s voice was shaky, lacking the arrogant confidence he always carried.
He admitted he picked up the pills for Chloe because her back was hurting.
He claimed he left the bottle on the counter and Lily must have taken them out of curiosity.
The detective slammed his hand on the table.
He told Mark that they checked Lily’s phone and saw the text telling her not to call her mom.
Mark finally broke down in tears.
He confessed he slipped a single crushed pill into Lily’s tea earlier that evening.
He just wanted her to sleep deeply so she wouldn’t interrupt his date with Chloe.
He swore he only gave her one pill, not enough to cause an overdose.
A doctor interrupted the interrogation by rushing down the hallway.
He looked directly at me.
“We got the toxicology report back,” the doctor said.
