Chapter 2 - The Waiting Room

The hospital waiting room smelled like bleach and stale coffee.

I sat in a plastic chair, my clothes still stained with the vomit Lily had choked on in the ambulance.

Mark paced back and forth near the vending machines.

Chloe sat in the corner, chewing on her thumbnail and avoiding my gaze.

A police detective approached us with a notepad in his hand.

He asked Chloe why a fourteen-year-old girl had her heavy painkillers.

Chloe swore she had left her purse on the kitchen counter and Lily must have stolen them.

Mark immediately jumped to Chloe’s defense, calling Lily a troubled teen who made a tragic mistake.

I wanted to scream, but my corporate training kept my face completely blank.

The detective listened patiently before pulling out his smartphone.

“That’s an interesting theory, Miss Adams,” the detective said.

He turned the screen around to show us a security camera photo from a local pharmacy.

The time stamp was from earlier this afternoon.

It showed a man at the drive-through window picking up Chloe’s prescription.
