Chapter 4 - The Search

My heart stopped beating for a second.

Arsenic wasn't a mistake or a careless attempt to make a teenager sleep.

It was cold, calculated murder.

The detective immediately dispatched a team to our house to secure the scene.

I rode in the front seat of his unmarked cruiser, my hands shaking violently.

We walked into my home, which was now completely wrapped in yellow police tape.

The romantic steak dinner was still sitting on the dining room table.

The detective began bagging evidence, starting with the tea cup in the kitchen sink.

I noticed Chloe’s designer purse still sitting on the sofa where she had abandoned it.

I walked over and dumped its contents onto the coffee table.

Lipstick, car keys, and a thick manila envelope spilled out.

I opened the envelope.

It was a life insurance policy taken out on Lily just two weeks ago.

The payout was for two million dollars.

The sole beneficiary was Mark.
