Chapter 8 - The Trap

We were completely broke, homeless, and fighting a rigged system.

Greg finally snapped out of his guilt and promised me he would fix this.

He realized his sister was never going to change, and his mother was a lost cause.

We needed concrete evidence that the police chief couldn't ignore, something federal.

I remembered Mark mentioning that Rachel always kept a detailed ledger of her scams in her cloud storage.

But we didn't have her passwords, and we certainly couldn't hack into it.

We had to trick her into accessing it herself on a compromised device.

I used the last of my secret emergency cash to buy a burner laptop and a small, undetectable spyware program.

I sent Rachel an anonymous email, claiming to be a hacker who had found her hidden cameras.

I told her I had footage of her admitting to the bank fraud, and I demanded a ransom.

I included a fake link in the email, telling her the proof was in a secure drive.

We sat in the dark motel room, staring at the tracking software, waiting for a ping.

Hours went by, and I started to think she was too smart to fall for it.

Suddenly, the screen lit up green.

She had clicked the link, and the spyware was instantly downloading all of her saved passwords.

Greg quickly logged into her cloud account and started pulling down gigabytes of data.

It was all there: the forged signatures, the wire transfers, the fake medical bills.

We had her dead to rights.

I smiled for the first time in days, knowing we were going to win.

But then, the motel room door violently splintered inward with a deafening crash.

Three men in dark tactical gear stormed into the room, shining blinding flashlights in our eyes.

One of them aimed a weapon directly at Greg's chest.

And stepping into the room behind them was Rachel's lawyer, holding a warrant.
