Chapter 2 - The Interrogation

I took a deep breath and tried to keep my hands from shaking.

Greg stepped closer, demanding to know why Rachel was crying hysterically on speakerphone.

I hung up on her without another word.

I told Greg to sit down because he needed to hear the truth about his precious nephews and his saint of a sister.

I pulled out my phone and played the original, unedited audio recording of Rachel bribing her kids.

Greg listened to his sister's cruel words, and the color completely drained from his face.

He sat in silence for a long time, staring at the blank, shattered wall where our dream TV used to be.

He whispered that it made no sense, and that Rachel would never be that malicious on purpose.

I told him he was in denial and that she had hated me since the day we got married.

Just as he was about to argue with me, heavy knocks pounded on our front door.

Red and blue lights flashed through our living room windows.

The police had actually shown up.

I walked to the door and pulled it open, coming face to face with two stern-looking officers.

They asked if I was Maya, and I nodded slowly.

The taller officer placed a hand on his belt and told me I was a suspect in an aggravated assault.

Rachel had told them I mailed her a box of toxic chemicals and booby-trapped glass that cut her hands to the bone.

Before I could defend myself, Greg stepped in front of me.

He looked right at the officers and told them his wife was dangerous.
