Chapter 5 - The Enemy of My Enemy

I immediately showed Greg the message from Mark.
Greg hesitated, reminding me that Mark and Rachel had a very messy, bitter divorce.
He warned me that Mark might just be using us to get back at his ex-wife.
But I was out of options and running out of patience, so I agreed to meet Mark at a local diner.
We walked into the diner and found Mark sitting in a back booth, nursing a black coffee.
He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes and a tense jaw.
He didn't waste any time with small talk.
He slid a heavy, manila envelope across the sticky table toward me.
I opened it and found dozens of bank statements, forged signatures, and weird loan applications.
Mark explained that Rachel hadn't just broken a TV; she was a chronic fraudster.
He told us she had secretly taken out a second mortgage on their house before the divorce, completely ruining his credit.
Then, he pointed to a specific document near the bottom of the pile.
It was a business loan application for fifty thousand dollars.
The primary guarantor on the loan was listed as Greg.
My blood ran cold as I realized what I was looking at.
Rachel had stolen Greg's identity to fund her lifestyle.
I looked at Greg, expecting him to explode with anger.
Instead, Greg's face was completely pale, and his hands were shaking violently.

He looked at Mark and whispered that the signature wasn't forged.
Greg confessed that he had willingly signed it six months ago.
