Chapter 4 - The Caretaker's Cabin

Adrian desperately yanked the heavy steering wheel to avoid hitting the concrete barrier head-on.

The heavy sedan skidded violently across the wet asphalt, spinning completely out of control in the pouring rain.

The vehicle crashed aggressively into the thick mud of the roadside ditch, shattering the headlights completely.

The airbags deployed instantly, filling the dark cabin with thick, suffocating white smoke.

Adrian coughed violently and frantically turned around to check on his terrified son in the back seat.

Noah was crying softly but appeared to be entirely unharmed thanks to the heavy seatbelt.

"We have to leave the car right now before they find us," Adrian ordered with absolute urgency.

He kicked his jammed door completely open and pulled Noah safely out into the freezing storm.

They scrambled fiercely up the muddy embankment and ran blindly into the deep, dark woods.

The heavy rain washed away their footprints, but it also made the treacherous ground incredibly slippery.

Adrian's poisoned body was rapidly losing precious heat, and his muscles screamed in pure, unadulterated agony.

After an agonizing hour of walking, a faint yellow light flickered softly through the dense trees.

It was a small, rustic wooden cabin belonging to the old groundskeeper of the vast mountain estate.

Adrian pounded desperately on the heavy wooden door, praying someone was actually inside to help them.

An elderly man with a thick gray beard opened the door cautiously, holding a warm oil lantern.

"Mr. Sterling, what in the world happened to you and the young boy?" the old caretaker asked in pure shock.

The man quickly ushered them inside the incredibly warm, dry cabin and locked the heavy door securely.

He handed them thick wool blankets and poured two hot cups of sweet herbal tea.

Adrian felt the soothing warmth finally begin to chase the deadly poison completely out of his exhausted system.

"I need to use your landline phone to call the federal authorities right now," Adrian demanded firmly.

The old caretaker nodded slowly and walked over to the vintage rotary phone resting on the kitchen counter.

He picked up the heavy receiver, but he did not dial the emergency police number.

Instead, he dialed a short, private internal extension code that Adrian immediately recognized.

The old man turned around with a remarkably cold, entirely emotionless expression on his wrinkled face.

He casually pulled a heavy hunting rifle from beneath the counter and aimed it directly at Adrian.

"I have the father and the boy secured in the cabin, Vivian, exactly as we meticulously planned," the caretaker spoke into the phone.
