Chapter 1 - The Sealed Envelope

Adrian stared at the shattered champagne glass scattered across the pristine marble floor.

He held his shivering seven-year-old son tightly against his chest.

The grand ballroom was entirely silent except for Noah's quiet, desperate sobs.

Vivian took a slow step backward as the wealthy guests began to murmur in shock.

Adrian ignored his mother and walked directly toward the illuminated stage.

Every eye in the room followed his heavy, angry footsteps.

The mysterious woman in the red dress backed away in absolute terror.

She looked as though she was ready to bolt out the side exit.

Adrian snatched the thick white envelope from the wooden podium.

His hands shook slightly as he tore the wax seal open.

He pulled out a stack of dense legal documents printed on heavy parchment.

It was a formal petition transferring absolute, irrevocable custody of Noah directly to Vivian.

There was already a signature resting cleanly on the bottom line.

It was an absolutely perfect forgery of Adrian's own handwriting.

He looked up at the trembling woman in the red dress.

She was wearing a delicate silver locket resting against her collarbone.

Adrian recognized that locket instantly because he had bought it in Paris ten years ago.

It was the exact necklace his late wife was wearing the night she died.

"Who are you and why do you have my wife's jewelry?" Adrian demanded furiously.

The woman trembled violently and looked desperately toward Vivian for some kind of help.

Vivian stepped forward with a cold, completely unbothered smile.

"She is the boy's true biological mother, Adrian," Vivian announced loudly to the shocked crowd.

Adrian felt the air completely leave his lungs in a massive rush of pure shock.

His beloved wife, Clara, had died in a horrific car accident five years ago.

He had personally identified her ruined body at the grim city morgue.

But as the terrified woman in the red dress stepped into the bright stage lights, Adrian recognized her distinct green eyes.

It was Clara, his supposedly dead wife, staring back at him with tears streaming down her face.

She looked exactly as she had the day he lost her forever.

Clara suddenly reached into her small evening purse with a shaking hand.

She pulled out a sleek, suppressed handgun and aimed it directly at Adrian's chest.
