Chapter 9 - The Panic Alarm

Before Owen could pull the trigger, the house filled with the piercing, deafening shriek of the security alarm.

Red strobe lights flashed violently from the control panel, bathing the room in absolute chaos.

Owen flinched, instinctively lowering the weapon for a fraction of a second.

That was all the time Damon needed to scramble off the floor and tackle Owen by the knees.

The two men crashed into the glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of pieces.

Claire stood in the corner, screaming hysterically and clutching her stomach in terror.

"My baby, please don't hurt my baby!" Claire cried out over the blaring siren.

"It's not even his, you idiot!" Owen shouted at Damon while fighting for the gun.

"She went to a fertility clinic because you are completely sterile, Damon!"

Damon stopped fighting for a moment, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.

He had destroyed his real family for a child that wasn't even biologically his.

Police sirens wailed loudly in the distance, growing closer by the second.

I stood in the center of the room, completely untouched, watching the three of them destroy each other.

The front door splintered open as three heavily armed officers rushed inside.

"Drop the weapon right now!" the lead officer screamed, raising his tactical rifle.

Instead of dropping the gun, Owen turned and aimed the barrel directly at my stomach.

"If I go to prison, you lose everything," Owen whispered with a chilling, desperate smile.

My finger tightened on a shard of glass I had picked up, preparing to fight for my life.
