Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

A deafening gunshot echoed through the chaotic living room.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for a terrible pain that never came.

When I opened them, Owen was screaming on the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

The lead police officer had fired a split second before Owen could pull his trigger.

Other officers swarmed the room, violently pinning Owen and Damon to the floor in handcuffs.

Claire was escorted out by a female officer, weeping uncontrollably as her entire life fell apart.

I stood in the center of the wreckage, perfectly safe, knowing the nightmare was finally over.

Six months later, the dust had completely settled.

I sat in a comfortable rocking chair in a brand new, sunlit nursery.

My beautiful, healthy daughter, Lily, slept peacefully in my arms.

Damon was currently serving a ten-year sentence for embezzlement and domestic endangerment.

Owen was locked away for attempted murder and extortion.

With the help of a brilliant lawyer, I had recovered every single cent of the stolen money.

I bought a gorgeous little house by the coast, far away from all the betrayal and lies.

I was completely safe, financially secure, and finally happy as a single mother.

I kissed Lily's warm forehead, feeling a profound, unbreakable sense of peace.

My life finally belonged to me again, and nobody could ever take it away.

The doorbell rang suddenly, signaling the arrival of the afternoon mail.

I laid Lily gently in her crib and walked out to the porch to grab the stack of envelopes.

At the bottom of the pile was a plain brown envelope with absolutely no return address.

I tore it open, and a glossy photograph slid out into my palm.

It was a picture of me holding Lily, taken through the nursery window just moments ago.

On the back, written in Damon's messy handwriting, were four terrifying words.

"Daddy is coming home."
