Chapter 20 - The Silent Victory

Five years later, the heavy winter snow was falling softly outside the massive bay windows of my Colorado mountain estate.

I sat by a roaring stone fireplace, holding a mug of rich hot chocolate.

Lily, now a bright, energetic five-year-old, was sitting on the thick rug, building a massive castle out of colorful wooden blocks.

She had Damon’s dark hair, but she had my absolute resilience and bright, observant eyes.

Liam walked into the living room, brushing fresh snow off his heavy winter coat. Over the years, he had transitioned from my security contractor to my most trusted friend, and eventually, to the gentle, protective father figure Lily desperately needed.

"Mail's here," Liam smiled, dropping a stack of letters onto the coffee table.

I sifted through the envelopes casually. Bills, holiday cards, and a thick legal envelope from Sarah's law firm.

I opened the legal document and scanned the crisp white pages.

It was a routine update on the inmates.

Damon's final appeal had been completely denied by the supreme court. He had been transferred to a maximum-security federal facility in the middle of a desert, entirely cut off from the outside world.

Claire was working in a prison laundry room, her mental health heavily deteriorating according to the state psychiatric evaluations.

Owen was still serving time in solitary confinement after getting into a violent altercation with another inmate.

I felt absolutely nothing as I read the words. No anger, no fear, no lingering sadness.

They were just ink on paper, ghosts trapped in a nightmare of their own making.

I tossed the legal document directly into the roaring fireplace.

The paper curled and blackened instantly, consumed by the bright orange flames until nothing was left but fine, gray ash floating up the chimney.

"Everything good?" Liam asked, sitting down next to me on the leather sofa.

"Everything is absolutely perfect," I replied, leaning my head against his shoulder.

"Look, Mommy! The castle is finished!" Lily cheered proudly, pointing to her towering wooden creation.

"It's beautiful, sweetheart," I beamed, getting down on the floor to help her place a tiny flag on the highest tower. "Nobody can ever knock this one down."

I looked around my beautiful, impenetrable home, surrounded by the people who truly loved me.

The silent game was finally over.

And I had won.
