Chapter 17 - Checkmate

Damon shielded his eyes from the blinding strobes, swinging the steel crowbar wildly into the empty hallway.
"Maya!" Damon roared, sounding like a trapped, feral beast. "Where are you hiding?!"
I stood safely at the base of the stairs, protected by Liam, who had a non-lethal tactical rifle raised and aimed directly at Damon's chest.
"I'm right here, Damon," I called out, my voice echoing loudly up the stairwell. "But I wouldn't take another step if I were you."
Claire was hyperventilating, pressing herself flat against the nursery wall in sheer panic.
"You set us up!" Claire screamed, tears ruining her pale face. "You ruined my life, Maya!"
"You ruined your own life, Claire," I replied coldly. "You chose to sleep with my husband. You chose to aid a criminal. And tonight, you chose to attempt a kidnapping."
Damon laughed hysterically, gripping the railing and looking down at me through the flashing lights.
"You have no proof, Maya. This is my house too! My name is still on the original deed," Damon sneered. "I came to check on my property. You illegally detained us."
I smiled, a genuine, completely unbothered smile.
"That would be a great defense, Damon," I said slowly. "Except you forgot about the microphones you had Claire plant in my walls."
Damon froze, the smug arrogance finally melting off his face.
"Liam tapped into your illegal frequency," I explained, holding up a small digital recorder. "I have crystal clear audio of Claire detailing your entire plan to kidnap my daughter and extort me for the settlement money. It recorded the moment you stepped through the patio door."
Damon dropped the crowbar, the heavy steel clattering down the wooden stairs.
He finally realized he was completely cornered. There were no more legal loopholes. There were no more pawns left to sacrifice.
"Maya, please," Damon begged, his voice suddenly small and pathetic. "I'm sick. I lost my mind. Don't do this."
"I didn't do anything," I whispered. "I just let you destroy yourself."
I nodded at Liam.
Liam pressed the panic button on his belt. The piercing shriek of the perimeter alarms activated, instantly alerting the local police precinct that a home invasion was in progress.
Red and blue sirens began wailing in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Claire slid down the wall and began sobbing uncontrollably, covering her ears.
Damon sat down heavily on the top step, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his final, inescapable failure crushed him.
