Chapter 19 - The Empty House

The next two weeks passed in an absolute blur of packing boxes and signing endless stacks of real estate paperwork.

The local news had run wild with the story of Damon's spectacular downfall. He was painted as a deranged corporate mastermind who completely lost his grip on reality.

I refused all interview requests, choosing instead to focus entirely on my daughter and our brand new future.

I walked through the empty rooms of the coastal house one last time.

The expensive furniture was gone. The shattered coffee table had been replaced, and the hardwood floors were perfectly polished.

It looked exactly like the model home Damon and I had toured so many years ago, back when I thought my life was a perfect fairy tale.

I walked into the kitchen and ran my hand along the cold granite counter. I remembered the exact moment Damon had dropped the salad dressing bottle when I mentioned inviting Claire over.

It felt like a lifetime ago. I was not the same naive, trusting woman who had stood in this kitchen. I had been forged in absolute fire.

Liam was waiting for me outside, leaning against his black SUV. He had resigned from the corporate security firm to start his own independent protection agency, and I had hired him on a permanent retainer.

"Ready to go?" Liam asked, opening the passenger door for me.

I looked at Lily, who was cooing happily in her car seat, entirely unaware of the darkness we had just escaped.

"Yes," I said, handing Liam the keys to the front door. "Leave them on the counter for the realtor. I never want to see them again."

As we drove away from the coastline, the heavy gray clouds finally broke, allowing a brilliant, golden beam of sunlight to wash over the highway.

"Where are we heading first?" Liam asked, glancing at me through the rearview mirror.

"I found a gorgeous little estate tucked away in the mountains of Colorado," I replied, pulling up a picture on my phone. "It has fifty acres of private land, heavy security gates, and a beautiful greenhouse."

"Sounds impenetrable," Liam chuckled softly.

"Exactly," I smiled.

I leaned my head against the cool glass of the window, watching the city skyline fade away behind us.

Damon, Claire, and Owen were locked in tiny concrete boxes, suffocating on their own toxic lies.

I, on the other hand, had the entire world at my fingertips.
