Chapter 14 - The Legal Loophole

I slammed the heavy metal receiver onto the hook and walked out of the prison visitation room without looking back.
My mind was reeling, completely unable to process the sheer audacity of Damon's plan.
As soon as I got into Liam's SUV, I called my high-priced divorce attorney, Sarah.
"Tell me Damon is lying about an appeal," I demanded before she could even say hello.
Sarah let out a heavy, exhausted sigh on the other end of the line.
"I was just about to call you, Maya. It's a disaster," Sarah admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "Owen just signed a sworn affidavit stating that he orchestrated the entire violent confrontation at your old house."
"That's a complete lie!" I screamed, slamming my hand against the leather dashboard. "Damon pulled the gun first! Damon had the illegal offshore accounts!"
"Owen is taking the fall for the financial crimes in exchange for a reduced sentence on his attempted murder charge," Sarah explained grimly. "He is claiming Damon was acting under extreme duress and blackmail. The judge just granted an emergency evidentiary hearing."
Damon had outsmarted us all. He used his remaining hidden funds to buy Owen's complete loyalty from behind bars.
Owen had nothing left to lose, but by taking the blame, he was handing Damon the key to a cell door.
"When does he get out?" I asked, my voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm whisper.
"If the judge throws out the main evidence of embezzlement, Damon could make bail in forty-eight hours pending a new trial," Sarah replied.
I hung up the phone and looked over at Liam, who had heard every single word through the car's Bluetooth system.
"He's getting out," I said hollowly. "And Claire is already out there stalking me."
Liam shifted the SUV into drive and peeled out of the prison parking lot with a violent screech of tires.
"We aren't going back to the coast," Liam ordered, tapping a location into his GPS. "Your house is compromised. We are going to a secure safehouse my firm owns in the mountains."
"No," I said, a dangerous new idea forming in my mind.
I looked at the sleeping baby in the backseat. I was entirely done running. I was done being the victim in Damon's twisted, narcissistic games.
"We are going back to my house," I told Liam with absolute conviction. "If they want to play a game of shadows, we are going to set a trap."

Liam looked at me, a rare smile breaking across his stoic face.
"Tell me what you need," Liam said.
