Chapter 4 - The Gas Chamber

The toxic white smoke filled the basement faster than Giulietta could breathe.
Warren and Preston began coughing violently, thrashing against their ropes.
Giulietta pulled her silk handkerchief from her pocket and covered her mouth and nose.
She ran to the heavy steel door and slammed her fists against it.
It was locked tight from the other side.
Her uncle Silvio was not taking any chances with her survival.
She looked around the dim room for any possible exit.
There was a small ventilation shaft near the top of the concrete wall, but it was covered by a thick iron grate.
She ran over to Preston, who was now choking on the poisonous gas.
"Give me the golf club," she demanded.
One of her guards had thrown Preston's metal club into the corner of the room earlier.
Giulietta grabbed the heavy club and climbed onto a wooden crate below the vent.
She swung the metal shaft with all her remaining strength against the iron grate.
The metal sparked and groaned, but it did not break.
Her lungs burned, and her vision started to blur at the edges.
She swung again, putting every ounce of her anger into the strike.
The iron grate finally shattered and fell to the floor.
She pulled herself up into the narrow shaft just as Warren Hale stopped breathing completely.
She crawled through the dark tunnel until she tumbled out into the cold night air of the alleyway.
She gasped for clean oxygen, leaning against the brick wall.

When she finally looked up, she saw a black van blocking the exit of the alley.
Three men in dark masks stepped out and pointed assault rifles directly at her chest.
